Default Unreal Engine 3 Freed

http://www.moddb.com/engines/unreal-...free-to-indies

Epic have done the unexpected. They've made their latest engine totally free. Anyone can freely develop their very own game on the engine using all the tools provided by the development suite. The catch is you have to pay a quarter of your profit to Epic after you make over 5 grand. Considering the power UE3 holds and how beautiful games can look on it, it's a pretty small price to pay if developers know what they are doing.

There's been many good games on UE3, such as Mass Effect, Mirrors Edge, Borderlands, Gears of War, Bioshock, Rainbow Six Vegas (1&2), and tons of other titles I don't feel like listing.

This basically means that any of you can go download the UDK (Unreal Development Kit) and start making a game. Of course...you'll need to learn, but Epic is so epic that they'll more than likely include a totally kick-ass documentation on how to use their tools.

There's one thing getting me about this though. Does it not seem like some kind of outcry by Epic? Their engine has slowly become less and less used by other developers. Sure there's been numerous fantastic games developed on it but, if you ask me, Unreal Tournament 3 was a really disappointing endeavor on their part. The game is dirt cheap already, and had like 4 free weekends on steam, and eventually wen't on sale for $10 for a month or 2. I'm curious as to what Epic's motives were when they decided to do this. The Unreal Engine is what all their games have run on, and for them to suddenly decide to make UE3 totally free to develop on seems like a real drastic measure to get more business.

I dunno...we'll just have to wait and see.

Great news indeed. There are already a ton of mods out there for UT3. With a free UE3, we'll soon see tons of (free?) games out there.

I do agree that Unreal Tournament 3 was a dissapoiting title but the engine is far from that. It scales well (the hardware needed to run any of the games at a playable level is pretty minimal) and looks great. Although I doubt we'll see a flood of tonnes of brand new games free of charge (or for a price) I do think we will see a few good titles over the next year or so. I'd suspect that Epic are perhaps well into making their next engine and so they've decided to give this one to the community.

http://www.udk.com/ has quite a few mods on its site.
This sure looks promising for the future.

It's not fully free, It's free for non commercial use, however there are royalties to pay if you sell your product, and I think a 99 dollar licencing fee too.
